In an average day, we all use approximately 160 litres of water in the home environment for everyday tasks such; washing, drinking and cooking etc. These modern appliances we use, such as a dishwasher use large amounts of water. By starting to be a bit more conscious around the home, we can be more aware of trying to use a lot less water.

About 80% of household water usage is at the washbasin. When we brush our teeth, wash our hands or have a quick shave, why don’t we turn off the tap instead of leaving the water run. By not turning the tap off, this could waste up to 5 litres of water a minute!

Instead of having a bath, why not have a shower instead, as a 5 minute shower uses about a third of the water, you would normally use in a bath.

  • You use about 80 litres of water having a bath

  • You use about 35 litres of water having a shower

When you are looking to purchase a new appliance, ask for one that is water efficient.

Leaking taps – one drip per second wastes 15 litres of water per day.

A washing machine cycle uses up to 100 litres of water, so make sure you only use your washing machine when you have a full load.

If you are washing your car, use a bucket and sponge as a hose can use up to 100 litres of water in an hour.

  1. Know exactly where the stop value is for incoming water and that it works properly.

  1. Do you know the location of your outside manhole? You may need access to your drains.

  1. Ensure that all of your exposed pipes and storage systems are well insulated, especially all pipes in the loft.

  1. When it is really cold, prevent pipes from becoming frozen. If you open your loft hatch and allow warm air to rise into the loft space, this will stop the cistern from freezing.

  1. Do not leave leaking taps or ball values go unchecked, this generally means that your plumbing system needs some form of maintenance or repair.

  1. Stop values corrode – get them checked every 3 months.
